He began his professional career in 1975, playing for the Salvador-based team, Clube Atlético Bahia. He then moved to the Brazilian National Team in 1979, where he played until 1983. During this time, he won the South American Championship in 1981 and the Pan American Games in 1983. In 1984, he moved to the United States to play for the New York Knicks in the NBA. He played for the Knicks until 1988, when he returned to Brazil to play for the Brazilian National Team. He then moved to the Brazilian club, Flamengo, where he played until his retirement in 1995. Throughout his career, Gilson Trinidade de Jesus has won numerous awards and honors, including the Brazilian National Championship in 1985 and the Brazilian Cup in 1988.
