Georges Marchais was a French politician who served as the General Secretary of the French Communist Party from 1972 to 1994. He was born on 7 June 1920 in La Hoguette, Calvados, France. He was educated at the Lycée Michelet in Vanves and the Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris. Marchais began his political career in 1945, when he joined the French Communist Party. He was elected to the National Assembly in 1956 and served as a deputy until 1981. In 1972, he was elected General Secretary of the French Communist Party, a position he held until 1994. During his tenure as General Secretary, Marchais was a vocal critic of the Soviet Union and its policies. He also opposed the policies of French President François Mitterrand, and was a vocal opponent of the European Union. Marchais retired from politics in 1994 and died in 1997. He was 77 years old.
