George W. Hart is an American geometer and sculptor. He is best known for his research in the field of geometrical sculpture and for his work in popularizing mathematics. He is a professor of mathematics at Stony Brook University and a former research professor at the University of Connecticut. Hart was born in 1955 in New York City. He received his B.A. in mathematics from Columbia University in 1977 and his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1983. Hart is the author of several books on mathematics and sculpture, including Multidimensional Analysis: Algebras and Systems for Science and Engineering (Springer, 2002), Geometric Sculpture: Design and Creation (Princeton University Press, 2007), and Zome Geometry: Hands-on Learning with Zome Models (Princeton University Press, 2011). He is also the author of the popular mathematics book, Mathematical Impressions (Princeton University Press, 2012). Hart is the founder of the non-profit organization, the Institute for Figuring, which promotes the public understanding of science and mathematics through the use of sculpture and other visual media.
