George Avakian is an American record producer, talent scout, and music historian. He is best known for his work in jazz, having produced albums for artists such as Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, and Dave Brubeck. He is also credited with introducing the LP record to the United States. Avakian was born in Armarvir, Russia, to Armenian parents. He moved to the United States in 1923 and grew up in New York City. He attended Columbia University, where he studied music and graduated in 1940. Avakian began his career in the music industry in 1941, working as a talent scout for Columbia Records. He was responsible for signing artists such as Louis Armstrong, Dave Brubeck, and Miles Davis. He also produced several albums for these artists, including Armstrong's Hot Fives and Sevens and Davis' Birth of the Cool. Avakian is credited with introducing the LP record to the United States in 1948. He also produced the first stereo recordings for Columbia Records in 1954. Avakian has received numerous awards and honors for his work in the music industry. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000 and was awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006. Avakian is currently retired and lives in New York City.
