Geoffrey Oryema is a Ugandan musician and songwriter. He is best known for his albums Exile (1990) and Beat the Border (1993). He has also released several other albums, including Night to Night (1995), Spirit (1998), and Makambo (2003). Oryema began his musical career in the 1970s, when he was a member of the Ugandan band Akarawe. He left the band in 1977 and moved to France, where he began to pursue a solo career. His first album, Exile, was released in 1990 and was a critical success. It featured the hit single "Makambo", which was a top 10 hit in France. Oryema has since released several other albums, including Beat the Border (1993), Night to Night (1995), Spirit (1998), and Makambo (2003). He has also collaborated with other artists, including Peter Gabriel, Youssou N'Dour, and Baaba Maal. Oryema has been nominated for several awards, including a Grammy Award for Best World Music Album in 1998. He has also been awarded the French Order of Arts and Letters in 2000.

1994

Oryema earned his international reputation on the release of his second album, Beat the Border. He had collaborated with Peter Gabriel and others, and was backed by French musicians including Jean-Pierre Alarcen (guitar) and Patrick Buchmann (drums, percussion, backing vocals), touring with WOMAD in Australia, the USA, Japan, Brazil and Europe. In 1994 the band performed at Woodstock 94 celebrating the 25th anniversary of the legendary festival.

Geoffrey Oryema (16 April 1953 – 22 June 2018) was a Ugandan musician. In 1977 after the murder of his father, Erinayo Wilson Oryema, who was a cabinet minister in the government of Idi Amin, he began his life in exile. At the age of 24, and at the height of Amin's power, Oryema was smuggled out of the country in the trunk of a car.
