Gary Stroutsos is an American musician, composer, and flutist. He is best known for his Native American-style flute music, which he has been performing and recording since the early 1980s. He has released over 20 albums, and has performed and recorded with a variety of artists, including R. Carlos Nakai, Mary Youngblood, and Robert Mirabal. Stroutsos was born in Barre, Vermont, and grew up in the nearby town of Montpelier. He began playing the flute at the age of 12, and was inspired by the music of Native American flutists such as R. Carlos Nakai and Mary Youngblood. He studied music at the University of Vermont, and later at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Stroutsos has released over 20 albums, including his debut album, "The Flute of the Wind" (1985), and his most recent album, "The Journey" (2020). He has also collaborated with a variety of artists, including R. Carlos Nakai, Mary Youngblood, Robert Mirabal, and Peter Kater. Stroutsos has been nominated for two Grammy Awards, and has won numerous awards, including the Native American Music Award for Best Instrumental Recording (2005) and the Indian Summer Music Award for Best Instrumental Recording (2006). He has also been featured in several films, including "The New World" (2005) and "The Revenant" (2015). Stroutsos is currently based in Seattle, Washington, where he continues to compose and perform music.
