He is a two-time Olympic gold medalist, having won gold in the men's coxless fours at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal and the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. He also won a bronze medal in the men's coxless fours at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Konertz began his rowing career in 1972, when he joined the German national rowing team. He competed in the men's coxless fours at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, where he won a gold medal. He also competed in the men's coxless fours at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, where he won a second gold medal.
