Frédéric Back is a German-born Canadian animator, director, and illustrator. He is best known for his Academy Award-winning animated short film, The Man Who Planted Trees (1987). He was born on April 8, 1924 in Saarbrücken, Germany. Back studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Strasbourg, France, and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, Germany. He moved to Canada in 1951 and began working as an illustrator for the National Film Board of Canada (NFB). He worked as an animator and director for the NFB for over 30 years, creating over 30 animated films. Back won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film for The Man Who Planted Trees in 1988. He also won the Genie Award for Best Animated Short Film for Crac! (1981) and the Canadian Film Award for Best Animated Short Film for The Mighty River (1995).
