Fred Allen was born on May 31, 1894 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was the son of Irish immigrants, James and Mary Sullivan. He was the youngest of four children. At the age of 12, Fred began working as a newspaper delivery boy. He also worked as a shoe shiner and a janitor. He attended the local public schools and graduated from Cambridge High and Latin School in 1912. Fred Allen began his career in vaudeville in 1914. He was a part of a comedy duo with his wife, Portland Hoffa. They performed in various venues across the country. In the 1920s, Fred Allen began appearing on radio shows. He was a regular on the NBC show, The Chase and Sanborn Hour. In 1932, Fred Allen created his own show, The Fred Allen Show. It was a popular show that ran for 14 years. He also wrote and performed in several Broadway shows. In the 1940s, Fred Allen began appearing in films. He appeared in films such as The Big Street, The Meanest Man in the World, and The Great Man Votes. Fred Allen was married to Portland Hoffa from 1914 until her death in 1957. He died on March 17, 1956 in New York City. He was 61 years old. Fred Allen had an estimated net worth of $2 million at the time of his death.
