Franz Grothe was a German composer and conductor. He is best known for his film scores, which include the classic German films M and The Testament of Dr. Mabuse. He also composed the music for the popular German television series Der Alte. Grothe was born in Berlin in 1908. He studied music at the Berlin Conservatory and later at the University of Music and Theatre in Leipzig. He began his career as a conductor and composer in the 1930s, and his first film score was for the 1933 film M. He went on to compose music for over 50 films, including The Testament of Dr. Mabuse, The Great Escape, and The Blue Angel. Grothe was also a prolific composer of concert music, writing works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments. He wrote several ballets, including The Magic Flute and The Nutcracker. He also wrote several operas, including The Magic Flute and The Marriage of Figaro. Grothe died in Berlin in 1982. He is remembered as one of the most important German film composers of the 20th century.
