François Hollande is a French politician who served as President of France from 2012 to 2017. He was previously the First Secretary of the Socialist Party from 1997 to 2008, and the Mayor of Tulle from 2001 to 2008. He was born in Rouen, Seine-Inférieure, and studied at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris and the École nationale d'administration. Hollande was elected President of France in 2012, defeating incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy. During his presidency, he implemented a number of reforms, including the legalization of same-sex marriage and the introduction of a 75% tax rate on incomes over €1 million. He also oversaw the withdrawal of French troops from Afghanistan and the intervention in Mali. Hollande's presidency was marked by a number of controversies, including allegations of financial impropriety and a scandal involving his former partner, Valérie Trierweiler.
