Francis Scott Key was an American lawyer, author, and amateur poet from Maryland who wrote the lyrics to the United States' national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner". He was born on August 1, 1779, in Frederick, Maryland, to a prominent family of lawyers and politicians. He attended St. John's College in Annapolis, Maryland, and later studied law in Baltimore. Key served as a lawyer in the Maryland state legislature and later as a district attorney in Washington, D.C. He was also a staunch supporter of the United States during the War of 1812, and wrote the lyrics to "The Star-Spangled Banner" after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry in Baltimore. Key's poem was set to the tune of a popular British drinking song, and it was officially adopted as the national anthem of the United States in 1931. He died on January 11, 1843, in Baltimore, Maryland.
