Francesc Betriu is a Spanish writer, director, and assistant director. He is best known for his work on the films "The Spirit of the Beehive" (1973), "The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie" (1972), and "The Milky Way" (1969). He has also written several books, including "The Art of Cinema" (1975) and "The Art of Directing" (1977). Betriu was born in Organyà, Lleida, Catalonia, Spain, on 18 January 1940. He studied at the Escola Oficial de Cinema in Barcelona, and later at the Institut del Teatre in Barcelona. He began his career as an assistant director in the 1960s, working on films such as "The Milky Way" (1969) and "The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie" (1972). In 1973, Betriu wrote and directed his first feature film, "The Spirit of the Beehive". The film was a critical and commercial success, and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He went on to direct several other films, including "The House of the Spirits" (1974), "The Garden of Delights" (1977), and "The House of the Sun" (1980). Betriu has also written several books on the art of cinema, including "The Art of Cinema" (1975) and "The Art of Directing" (1977).
