Femi Falana is a Nigerian lawyer, human rights activist, and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). He is the founder and principal partner of the law firm Femi Falana & Co. He is a former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and a former member of the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention. Falana was born on 20 May 1958 in Ilawe Ekiti, Nigeria. He attended the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) where he obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1981. He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1982. Falana has been involved in several high-profile cases in Nigeria, including the defense of the Ogoni Nine, a group of activists who were charged with treason in 1995. He has also represented the families of victims of police brutality and extrajudicial killings. Falana is a vocal critic of the Nigerian government and has been arrested several times for his activism. He is a member of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights and the International Commission of Jurists. Falana is married to Funmi Falana and they have three children.
