Fatima Meer was a South African writer, academic, anti-apartheid activist, and feminist. She was born in Durban, Natal, South Africa, on 12 August 1928. She was the daughter of a prominent Indian lawyer and political activist, Ismail Meer. Fatima Meer was educated at the University of Natal, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Psychology in 1949. She then went on to pursue a Master of Arts degree in English at the same university, which she completed in 1951. Fatima Meer was a prolific writer, publishing numerous books, articles, and essays. Her works include the novels The Long Journey (1962), The Imprisonment of Women (1966), and The House of Bondage (1975). She also wrote several biographies, including those of Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo, and Mahatma Gandhi. In addition to her writing, Fatima Meer was an active anti-apartheid activist. She was a founding member of the Black Sash, a women's rights organization, and was a member of the African National Congress. She was also a member of the United Democratic Front, a multi-racial anti-apartheid organization. Fatima Meer passed away on 28 April 2010, at the age of 81. She was survived by her husband, Ismail Meer, and their two children, Zubeida and Zain.
