Eugene Robinson is an American journalist and political analyst. He is currently a columnist for The Washington Post and a senior political analyst for MSNBC. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Commentary in 2009 for his columns on the 2008 presidential election. Robinson was born in Orangeburg, South Carolina, and graduated from Orangeburg Wilkinson High School in 1972. He attended the University of Michigan, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1976. He then attended the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, where he earned a master's degree in 1978. Robinson began his career as a reporter for The San Francisco Examiner in 1978. He then moved to The Washington Post in 1980, where he has worked ever since. He has served as a reporter, editor, and columnist for the paper. He was named associate editor in 2005 and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Commentary in 2009. Robinson is also a senior political analyst for MSNBC, appearing regularly on the network's programs. He is the author of several books, including Disintegration: The Splintering of Black America (2010) and Disinvited: The Canceling of Black America's Invitation to the White House (2020). Robinson was awarded the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Commentary in recognition of his columns that focused on then-Senator Barack Obama in the context of his first presidential campaign.

1976

In 1976, he began his journalism career at the San Francisco Chronicle; his early assignments included the trial of publishing heiress Patty Hearst. He joined The Washington Post in 1980. Working his way up through the ranks, he was first a city hall reporter at the paper. He then became the assistant city editor; a South America correspondent based in Buenos Aires, Argentina; London bureau chief; foreign editor; and, most recently, the assistant managing editor of the paper's Style section. He began writing columns for the opinion page of the paper in 2005, also writes a twice-a-week column on politics and culture, and conducts a weekly online conversation with readers.

1974

Before graduating from the University of Michigan in 1974, he was the first African American co-editor-in-chief of The Michigan Daily. During the 1987-1988 academic year, he was a mid-career Nieman Fellow at Harvard University.

His columns are syndicated to 262 newspapers by The Washington Post Writers Group.
