He won the World Cup overall title in 1977 and 1978, and was the first Swiss skier to win the World Cup. He also won the World Cup slalom title in 1977 and 1978, and the giant slalom title in 1978. Josi competed in the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria, where he won a bronze medal in the giant slalom. He also competed in the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, where he finished in fourth place in the giant slalom.
