He began his career in the 1930s, working on films such as The Blue Angel (1930) and The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (1933). He also worked on the classic film Casablanca (1942). Hillier was a master of lighting and composition, and his work was highly praised by his peers. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography for his work on the film The Inn of the Sixth Happiness (1958). Hillier passed away on 28 April, 1984 in Berlin, Germany. He was 72 years old.
