Ernest Gold was an Austrian-born composer and conductor who is best known for his Academy Award-winning score for the 1960 film Exodus. He was born in Vienna, Austria, on July 13, 1921, and began studying music at the age of five. He studied at the Vienna Academy of Music and the University of Vienna, and then moved to the United States in 1939. Gold composed the scores for over 50 films, including The Young Lions (1958), The Big Fisherman (1959), The Guns of Navarone (1961), and The Shoes of the Fisherman (1968). He also wrote the music for the Broadway musicals Irma La Douce (1960) and The Roar of the Greasepaint – The Smell of the Crowd (1965). Gold won an Academy Award for Best Original Score for Exodus in 1960, and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score for The Shoes of the Fisherman in 1969. He also won a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement for the song “Exodus” in 1961. Gold died on April 15, 1999, in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 77.
