Erna Berger was a German soprano and actress who had a successful career in opera and operetta. She was born on 19 October 1900 in Dresden, Germany. She studied at the Dresden Conservatory and made her debut in 1921 at the Dresden State Opera. She went on to perform at the Berlin State Opera, the Vienna State Opera, and the Salzburg Festival. Berger was best known for her roles in operettas, including Johann Strauss's Die Fledermaus and Franz Lehár's The Merry Widow. She also appeared in several films, including The Great Caruso (1951) and The Great Waltz (1938). Berger was married to the Austrian composer and conductor Robert Stolz from 1934 until his death in 1975. She died on 28 April 1990 in Vienna, Austria.

She was an actress, known for The Marriage of Figaro (1949), Mozart's Don Giovanni (1955) and Falstaff in Vienna (1940). She was married to Sverre Wiull.

Her discography features complete recordings of Die Zauberflöte (as the Queen of Night, conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham, 1937-38, for EMI), and Rigoletto, with Jan Peerce and Leonard Warren, conducted by Renato Cellini (1950) which was the first complete opera recording (with a few minor cuts) made in the United States by RCA Victor for commercial release. It is also the first complete opera ever released on long-playing (LP) records.

Her breakthrough followed in 1926 with an engagement at the Staatsoper in Dresden where she had her first success in "Hanneles Himmelfahrt". In the next years followed engagements at many important State Operas like Vienna and Berlin and finally she toured around the work, e.g. Japan, Australia, Africa and America.
