Enoch Powell was a British politician and Member of Parliament who served in the Conservative Party from 1950 to 1974. He was a controversial figure, known for his outspoken views on immigration and race relations. He was also a noted classical scholar and linguist. Powell was born in Stechford, Birmingham, England, on 16 June 1912. He was educated at King Edward's School, Birmingham, and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he studied classics and modern languages. He was a lecturer in classics at the University of Sydney from 1937 to 1939, and then served in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment during World War II. Powell was elected to the House of Commons in 1950, representing Wolverhampton South West. He held various ministerial posts in the Conservative governments of the 1950s and 1960s, including Minister of Health and Minister of Defence. He was also Shadow Defence Secretary from 1968 to 1970. In 1968, Powell made a speech in which he argued against the government's proposed race relations legislation. The speech, which became known as the "Rivers of Blood" speech, caused a political storm and Powell was dismissed from the Shadow Cabinet. He remained an MP until 1974, when he retired from politics. Powell died in 1998, aged 85. He was remembered as a controversial figure, but also as a brilliant scholar and linguist.
