Else Holmelund Minarik was a Danish-born American writer of children's books. She is best known for her Little Bear series of books, which she wrote from 1957 to 2002. She also wrote the Little Bear's Friend series, which was illustrated by Maurice Sendak. Else Holmelund Minarik was born on September 13, 1920 in Fredericia, Denmark. She moved to the United States in 1939 and attended Hunter College in New York City. She married her husband, William Minarik, in 1945. Else Holmelund Minarik wrote over 50 books for children, including the Little Bear series, which was illustrated by Maurice Sendak. The series was adapted into an animated television series in 1995. She also wrote the Little Bear's Friend series, which was illustrated by Sendak. Else Holmelund Minarik died on July 12, 2012 in New York City. She was 91 years old.
