Eleanor Bergstein is an American screenwriter, producer, and director best known for writing the screenplay for the 1987 romantic drama film Dirty Dancing. She also wrote the screenplay for the 2004 prequel, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights. Bergstein was born in Brooklyn, New York, on April 17, 1938. She attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where she earned a degree in English literature. She then attended the Yale School of Drama, where she earned a master's degree in playwriting. Bergstein began her career as a playwright, writing the play "The Big Love" in 1971. She then wrote the screenplay for the 1987 film Dirty Dancing, which was a major box office success and earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. She also wrote the screenplay for the 2004 prequel, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights. In addition to her work in film, Bergstein has written several books, including the novel "Dirty Dancing: The Time of Your Life" and the children's book "The Time of the King". She has also written for television, including episodes of the series "The Wonder Years" and "The Golden Girls". Bergstein is married to film producer Bruce Gilbert. They have two children.
