Edgar Ray Killen is an American former Ku Klux Klan leader who was convicted in 2005 of three counts of manslaughter in the 1964 deaths of three civil rights workers in Mississippi. He was sentenced to 60 years in prison, but was released in 2018 due to his age and health. Killen was born on January 17, 1925 in Union, Mississippi. He attended the University of Mississippi and was ordained as a Baptist minister in 1952. He was a member of the White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan and was involved in the 1964 murders of James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner. Killen was arrested in January 2005 and charged with three counts of manslaughter. He was convicted in June 2005 and sentenced to 60 years in prison.
