Edgar Kaufmann Jr. was an American architect, designer, and preservationist. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Edgar and Liliane Kaufmann. His father was a successful department store owner and his mother was a fashion designer. He attended Harvard University, where he studied architecture and design. Kaufmann Jr. is best known for his work on the restoration of Fallingwater, the iconic house designed by his father and Frank Lloyd Wright. He also designed the Kaufmann Conference Center at the University of Pittsburgh and the Kaufmann Theater at the Carnegie Museum of Art. Kaufmann Jr. was a founding member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and served as its president from 1965 to 1969. He was also a founding member of the American Institute of Architects and served as its president from 1971 to 1973. Kaufmann Jr. was married to artist and designer Anne Marie Schnitzer from 1941 until his death in 1989. He had two children, Edgar Kaufmann III and Liliane Kaufmann. Kaufmann Jr. was awarded the AIA Gold Medal in 1975 and the National Medal of Arts in 1988. He was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1982.
