Edgar Anstey was a British documentary filmmaker and producer. He was a pioneer of the British documentary movement, and was responsible for some of the most influential films of the 1930s and 1940s. He was a founding member of the British Documentary Film Movement, and was the first director of the British Film Institute's Documentary Film Unit. He was also a founding member of the National Film Board of Canada. Anstey was born in Watford, Hertfordshire, England, and attended the University of London. He began his career in the film industry in the late 1920s, working as a production manager for the British International Pictures. He then moved to the GPO Film Unit, where he worked as a director and producer. Anstey's most famous films include Night Mail (1936), which he co-directed with Basil Wright, and Housing Problems (1935), which he directed and produced. He also directed and produced the influential documentary series, The World at War (1939-1945). Anstey was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1945 for his services to documentary filmmaking. He died in London in 1987.
