Ed Thigpen was an American jazz drummer and percussionist. He was best known for his work with the Oscar Peterson Trio from 1959 to 1965. He was also a member of the Modern Jazz Quartet and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra. Thigpen began playing drums at the age of nine and was playing professionally by the age of sixteen. He studied at the Chicago Conservatory of Music and the American Conservatory of Music. Thigpen's career spanned over five decades and he worked with many of the greats of jazz, including Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, and Sonny Rollins. He also worked with pop and rock artists such as Paul Simon, Barbra Streisand, and Elton John. Thigpen was the recipient of numerous awards, including a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Performance by a Group for his work with the Oscar Peterson Trio in 1964. He was also inducted into the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame in 2002. Thigpen passed away on April 13, 2010 at the age of 79.
