He is best known for his work on films such as Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), Blade Runner (1982), and The Abyss (1989). Williams began his career in the film industry in the late 1950s, working as an assistant art director on films such as The Ten Commandments (1956) and The Alamo (1960). He then moved on to become an art director on films such as The Towering Inferno (1974) and The Black Hole (1979). In the 1980s, Williams began working in the field of visual effects, working on films such as Blade Runner (1982) and The Abyss (1989). He also worked on the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987-1994). Williams has been nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects, for Blade Runner and The Abyss.
