Douglas Unger is an American author and professor of English and creative writing. He was born in Moscow, Idaho, and grew up in the small town of Genesee, Idaho. He attended the University of Idaho, where he earned a B.A. in English in 1974 and an M.A. in English in 1976. He then attended the University of Iowa, where he earned an M.F.A. in creative writing in 1979. Unger has published several books of fiction, including Leaving the Land (1984), which won the PEN/Hemingway Award for best first novel, and The Price of a Child (1995), which was a finalist for the National Book Award. He has also published two collections of short stories, The Country of Lost Sons (1987) and The View from Coyote Hill (2001). Unger is currently a professor of English and creative writing at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He is also the director of the Black Mountain Institute, a literary center at UNLV.
