Benton was born in Hollis, Oklahoma, and attended the University of Oklahoma, where he earned a degree in radio and television production. After college, he moved to Los Angeles and began working in the television industry. He worked as a production assistant on the television series The Virginian and then as a production manager on the series The High Chaparral. Benton's first producing credit was for the television movie The Homecoming: A Christmas Story (1971), which was the pilot for The Waltons. Benton has been nominated for several awards, including an Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series for The Waltons in 1974 and a Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas in 1983.
