Dorothy Porter was born in Sydney, Australia, on 26 March 1954. She is an Australian poet, playwright, and novelist. She is best known for her verse novel The Monkey's Mask (1994). Porter studied at the University of Sydney, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and French. She then went on to study at the University of Melbourne, where she earned a Master of Arts degree in English and French. Porter's first book of poetry, Akhenaten, was published in 1983. She has since published several collections of poetry, including Wild Surmise (1984), The Fortunes of Richard Mahony (1987), and What a Piece of Work (2002). She has also written several plays, including The Monkey's Mask (1995) and The Bee Hut (1998). Porter has won numerous awards for her work, including the Age Book of the Year Award (1995), the Kenneth Slessor Prize for Poetry (1995), and the Victorian Premier's Literary Award (1995). Porter is currently living in Melbourne, Australia. She is unmarried and has no children.
