Dorothy Ashby was an American jazz harpist and composer. She was born in Detroit, Michigan, and began playing the harp at the age of nine. She studied classical music at the Detroit Conservatory of Music and later studied jazz with vibraphonist Terry Pollard. Ashby released her first album, The Jazz Harpist, in 1958. She went on to record several more albums, including Afro-Harping (1968), The Rubaiyat of Dorothy Ashby (1970), and In a Minor Groove (1976). She also composed music for television and film, including the theme song for the television show Sanford and Son. Ashby was a pioneer in the jazz harp genre, and her music was influential in the development of jazz fusion. She was inducted into the Michigan Jazz Hall of Fame in 2002. She died in 1986 at the age of 53.

Jazz and bop harpist in clubs in Philadelphia, New York, and Detroit, daughter of Wiley Thompson, a jazz guitarist. She studied piano and music education at Wayne State University and performed with Louis Armstrong and Woody Herman. She was a bandleader of trios and quartets which included Frank Wess, Roy Haynes, Jimmy Cobb, and many others between the late 1950s and the mid-1960s. In the early 1960s she was host of a radio program in Detroit, and in the mid-1970s, after moving to California, she played in studio orchestras on albums by Sonny Criss and Stanley Turrentine. She also worked in theater pit orchestras conducted by her husband, John Ashby.
