Dorothy Allison is an American writer and speaker known for her works exploring class struggle, sexual abuse, child abuse, feminism and lesbianism. She is the author of the critically acclaimed novel Bastard Out of Carolina, which was a finalist for the 1992 National Book Award. Her other works include the short story collection Trash, the novel Cavedweller, and the nonfiction book Two or Three Things I Know for Sure. Born in Greenville, South Carolina, Allison grew up in a working-class family. She was the first in her family to attend college, earning a B.A. in sociology from Florida Presbyterian College in 1972. She then earned an M.A. in English from the University of California, Berkeley in 1975. Allison has received numerous awards and honors for her work, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Lambda Literary Award, and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. She is currently a professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
