Donald Rumsfeld is an American politician and businessman who served as the 13th United States Secretary of Defense from 1975 to 1977 under President Gerald Ford, and again from 2001 to 2006 under President George W. Bush. He is the only person to have held the office twice. Rumsfeld was born in Chicago, Illinois, on July 9, 1932. He attended Princeton University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1954. He then attended Georgetown University Law Center, where he earned a Juris Doctor degree in 1957. Rumsfeld began his career in politics in 1962, when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Illinois's 13th congressional district. He served in the House until 1969, when he was appointed by President Richard Nixon to serve as Director of the Office of Economic Opportunity. Rumsfeld served as Secretary of Defense from 1975 to 1977 under President Gerald Ford, and again from 2001 to 2006 under President George W. Bush. During his tenure, he was responsible for overseeing the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Rumsfeld has also served as a corporate executive, most notably as CEO of G.D. Searle & Company from 1977 to 1985. He is currently a senior advisor to the investment firm Cerberus Capital Management. Rumsfeld has been awarded numerous honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States. He is also the author of several books, including Known and Unknown: A Memoir and Rumsfeld's Rules: Leadership Lessons in Business, Politics, War, and Life.
