Don the Beachcomber was an American restaurateur and inventor of the tiki bar and tiki culture. He was born Ernest Raymond Beaumont Gantt in New Orleans, Louisiana, on February 22, 1907. He was the son of a German-American father and a French-American mother. Don the Beachcomber was a pioneer of the tiki bar and tiki culture. He opened his first bar in Hollywood, California in 1933, and it quickly became a popular destination for Hollywood celebrities. He went on to open several other bars in California and Hawaii, and his influence on the tiki culture is still felt today. Don the Beachcomber was also an inventor, creating many of the drinks that are now associated with tiki bars. He is credited with inventing the Zombie, the Mai Tai, and the Navy Grog, among others. Don the Beachcomber died in 1989 at the age of 82. He left behind a legacy of tiki bars and tiki culture that continues to influence the bar and restaurant industry today.
