Gurevich was a child prodigy, becoming a Candidate Master at the age of 12. He won the Moscow Junior Championship in 1972 and the Moscow Championship in 1975. He was awarded the title of Grandmaster in 1977. Gurevich moved to the United States in 1979 and became a U.S. citizen in 1985. He won the U.S. Open in 1985 and the U.S. Championship in 1988. He has represented the United States in several international team events, including the Chess Olympiad and the World Team Championship. Gurevich has also been a successful chess coach and author.
