Dick Heckstall-Smith was an English jazz and blues saxophonist, composer, and session musician. He was a founding member of the Graham Bond Organisation and the John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. He was also a member of the jazz-rock group Colosseum. Heckstall-Smith was born in Ludlow, Shropshire, England. He began playing the saxophone at the age of 14, and was soon playing in local jazz bands. He attended the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied classical music. Heckstall-Smith was a session musician for many artists, including the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, and the Who. He was a founding member of the Graham Bond Organisation, and later joined John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. He was also a member of the jazz-rock group Colosseum. Heckstall-Smith released several solo albums, including The Safest Place in the World (1970), and The Big Chief (1972). He also composed music for films, including The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976). Heckstall-Smith died in 2004, at the age of 69.
