Dennis Nilsen is a Scottish serial killer who was convicted of six counts of murder and two of attempted murder between 1978 and 1983. He is believed to have killed at least 12 people, mostly homeless men, in London. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1983 and is currently serving his sentence at HMP Full Sutton in Yorkshire. Nilsen was born in Fraserburgh, Scotland, and grew up in a working-class family. He joined the British Army in 1961 and served in Germany and Northern Ireland. After leaving the army in 1972, he moved to London and worked as a civil servant. Nilsen's murders began in 1978 and continued until 1983. He would lure his victims to his home, where he would strangle them and then dismember their bodies. He would then dispose of the remains in various ways, including burning them in a bonfire or flushing them down the toilet. Nilsen was eventually caught in 1983 after a plumber discovered human remains in his drains. He was arrested and charged with six counts of murder and two of attempted murder. He was found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment. Nilsen is currently serving his sentence at HMP Full Sutton in Yorkshire. He is eligible for parole but has been denied release on several occasions.
