His short stories "The Olympic Runner" (1986) and "The Dog Park" (1993) both won British Fantasy Awards while "The Dark Country" (1981) won both the British Fantasy and World Fantasy Awards.
Has allegedly worked on scripts with John Carpenter and Dario Argento and was a staff writer for the HBO television series '_Hitchhiker, The (1983) (TV)_' in 1985.

Etchison graduated from Lynwood High in Lynwood, California in 1961 and went on to attend both Los Angeles State College and the University of California in Los Angeles.
Dennis worked a variety of part-time jobs that include several years as a gas station attendant in Malibu, California while writing his early short stories on the side in the 1960's and became a full-time writer in 1976.
