He was born in Forest Hill, London, England, UK on December 26, 1927. He was educated at Dulwich College and the University of London. Gifford began his career as a journalist, writing for the Daily Mail and the Daily Express. He then moved into television, writing for the BBC and ITV. He was also a producer and director for the BBC. Gifford wrote over 50 books on the history of film, television, and radio. He was also a regular contributor to magazines such as Radio Times and TV Times. He was a founding member of the British Film Institute and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. Gifford was awarded an OBE in 2000 for his services to the film and television industry. He died on April 28, 2000, at the age of 72.
