Dee Brown was an American author and historian who wrote extensively about the history of Native Americans. He was born on February 29, 1908, in Alberta, Louisiana, and grew up in Arkansas. He attended the University of Arkansas and graduated with a degree in English in 1929. Brown served in the United States Army during World War II and was stationed in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he worked as a journalist and editor for several newspapers in Arkansas and Oklahoma. He also wrote several books about the history of Native Americans, including Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee (1970), which was a bestseller and won the 1971 Bancroft Prize. Brown was a member of the Arkansas Writers Hall of Fame and was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Native American Journalists Association in 2000. He died on December 12, 2002, in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
