Deborah Sussman was an American graphic designer, artist, and educator. She was born in the Bronx, New York City, and studied at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. She was a pioneer in environmental graphic design, and her work was influential in the development of the field. Sussman was a founding partner of the design firm Sussman/Prejza & Co., which she co-founded with her husband Paul Prejza in 1979. She was also a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, where she taught for over 20 years. Sussman's work was characterized by its bold use of color and its integration of art and design. She was known for her large-scale public art projects, such as the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition, and the 1984 New York World's Fair. She also designed the iconic "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign. Sussman's work has been exhibited in museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. She was the recipient of numerous awards, including the AIGA Medal in 2004 and the National Design Award in 2005. Sussman passed away in 2014 at the age of 83.
