David Rothkopf is an American political scientist, journalist, and CEO. He is the author of several books on international relations, including Superclass: The Global Power Elite and the World They Are Making (2008) and National Insecurity: American Leadership in an Age of Fear (2013). He is the founder and CEO of The Rothkopf Group, a strategic advisory firm, and the editor of the FP Group, which publishes Foreign Policy magazine. Rothkopf was born in Urbana, Illinois, and graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1977. He received a master's degree in international relations from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in 1979. Rothkopf has held a number of positions in government and the private sector. He served as Deputy Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade Policy and Development in the Clinton administration, and as a senior advisor to the Secretary of Defense in the Obama administration. He has also served as a senior advisor to the Carlyle Group, a private equity firm, and as a managing director of Kissinger Associates, a consulting firm. Rothkopf is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Trilateral Commission. He is also a member of the board of directors of the National Endowment for Democracy and the Atlantic Council.
