David Harsent is a British poet, librettist, and composer. He was born on 30 November 1942 in Devon, England. He studied at the University of Hull and the University of East Anglia. He has published twelve collections of poetry, including Legion (2005), which won the T. S. Eliot Prize, and Fire Songs (2014), which was shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best Collection. He has also written several libretti for operas and choral works, and composed music for film and television. Harsent has been awarded numerous prizes and honors, including the Cholmondeley Award, the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry, and the Wilfred Owen Award. He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2021 New Year Honours for services to literature.
