David H. Souter is an American lawyer and former Supreme Court Justice. He was born on September 17, 1939 in Melrose, Massachusetts. He attended Harvard College and Harvard Law School, graduating magna cum laude in 1966. He then served as a law clerk for Judge Bailey Aldrich of the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. Souter was appointed to the New Hampshire Supreme Court in 1983 and served until 1990, when he was appointed to the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. In 1990, President George H. W. Bush nominated Souter to the Supreme Court of the United States. He was confirmed by the Senate and served on the Court from October 1990 until his retirement in June 2009. During his tenure on the Supreme Court, Souter wrote several notable opinions, including his dissent in Bush v. Gore, which held that the recount of votes in the 2000 presidential election should be stopped. He also wrote the majority opinion in Planned Parenthood v. Casey, which upheld the core holding of Roe v. Wade. As of 2021, David H. Souter's net worth is estimated to be $2 million.
