He is best known for his roles in the television series Boston Legal and the film Legally Blonde. Bottrell began his career as a stand-up comedian in the late 1980s. He has appeared in numerous television shows, including Seinfeld, The X-Files, and The West Wing. He has also appeared in films such as Legally Blonde, The Santa Clause 2, and The Santa Clause 3. Bottrell has written for television shows such as The Simpsons, King of the Hill, and The PJs. He has also written for the films The Santa Clause 2 and The Santa Clause 3. Bottrell is married to actress and writer Jessie Jones. They have two children. He currently resides in Los Angeles, California.

Bottrell has written about his experiences in the entertainment industry for the Huffington Post, Backstage, Salon.com and MetroSource magazine. His short film, Available Men premiered in the 2006 HBO Comedy Festival and went on to win 17 awards on the film festival circuit. On stage, he was one of the original cast members of both the Los Angeles and New York companies of the long-running comedy revue, Streep Tease: An Evening of Meryl Streep Monologues performed by an All-Male Company in which he performed his critically acclaimed 6-minute rendition of the entire plot of Out of Africa.
