David Ben-Gurion was a Zionist leader and the first Prime Minister of Israel. He was born in Plonsk, Poland, and immigrated to Palestine in 1906. He was a leader of the Labor Zionist movement and was instrumental in the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. He served as Prime Minister from 1948 to 1954 and again from 1955 to 1963. He was a major proponent of the Israeli Declaration of Independence and was a key figure in the negotiations that led to the armistice agreements with the Arab states. He was also a major proponent of the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty of 1979. Ben-Gurion was a controversial figure in Israeli politics and was often criticized for his authoritarian style of leadership. He died in 1973 at the age of 87.
