Dave Stapleton is an American jazz drummer, composer, and bandleader. He is best known for his work with saxophonist Joe Lovano, with whom he has recorded and toured since the early 1980s. He has also worked with a wide range of other jazz musicians, including John Scofield, Pat Metheny, and Dave Holland. Stapleton was born in Fairhope, Alabama, and grew up in nearby Mobile. He began playing drums at the age of nine, and by the time he was in high school he was playing professionally. He attended the University of North Texas, where he studied with Ed Soph and Ed Shaughnessy. After graduating in 1977, he moved to New York City, where he quickly established himself as a sought-after sideman. Stapleton has released several albums as a leader, including the Grammy-nominated albums Time Being (1996) and The Sign (1998). He has also composed music for film and television, including the score for the film The Brothers McMullen (1995). As of 2021, Dave Stapleton's net worth is estimated to be roughly $2 million.

After the 1986 season, Stapleton became a free agent and signed with the Seattle Mariners, but was released on March 31, 1987, prior to the start of the regular season.

During Game 6 of the 1986 World Series, Red Sox manager John McNamara left Buckner in the game rather than replace him with Stapleton for defensive purposes, leading to the Mookie Wilson ground ball that went through Buckner's legs, giving the New York Mets a come-from-behind win in the tenth inning. The Mets went on to win the Series four games to three.
