Gangemi has directed several feature films, including The Great Beauty (2013), which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2014. He also directed The Wonders (2014), which won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, and The First King (2019). Gangemi has also directed several short films, including The Last Day of Summer (2006), which won the Best Short Film Award at the Venice Film Festival, and The Red Shoes (2008), which won the Best Short Film Award at the Rome Film Festival. Gangemi has also worked as a cinematographer on several films, including The Great Beauty (2013), The Wonders (2014), and The First King (2019). Gangemi is currently based in Rome, Italy.

In 2009 he is invited to the 42nd Worldfest International Independent Film Festival of Houston in Texas for the world premier of his movie "Una notte blu cobalto" getting the award for the ”Best First Feature". In 2010 Bolero Film decides to bring his work to the movie theatres and in 2011 CG Home Video starts merchandising the DVDs of "Una notte blu cobalto" throughout the home video world.
