He attended San Francisco State University, where he studied acting. Mahoney began his acting career in the late 1960s, appearing in several television shows, including The Mod Squad, The F.B.I., and The Streets of San Francisco. He made his feature film debut in The Godfather Part II (1974), playing the role of a mobster. Mahoney went on to appear in several other films, including The Sting (1973), The Towering Inferno (1974), The Eiger Sanction (1975), and The Great Waldo Pepper (1975). He also appeared in the television miniseries Rich Man, Poor Man (1976). In the 1980s, Mahoney appeared in several television shows, including Magnum, P.I., Hill Street Blues, and Cheers. He also appeared in the films The Natural (1984) and The Money Pit (1986). In the 1990s, Mahoney appeared in the films The Hudsucker Proxy (1994) and The American President (1995). He also appeared in the television series Frasier, playing the role of Martin Crane, the father of Frasier and Niles Crane. Mahoney has continued to appear in films and television shows throughout the 2000s and 2010s.
